Sticky posts

Posted on 24. Oct, 2006 by Zii Bloggerrrr in Uncategorized

We just launched Sticky Posts! What are those? No, not those yellow reminders you have all over your screen and desk :-)

A sticky post is one that will always appear on the top of the blog main page regardless of the date. Many people use them for a more verbose description of the blog, welcome messages or comment posting rules.

To do a sticky post just check the box in the new post page, like this:

Please note that you can only have one sticky post per blog. Checking a second post as sticky removes the stickyness from the old one.

Post tagging

Posted on 18. Oct, 2006 by Zii Bloggerrrr in Uncategorized

As you probably noticed we have replaced the category list with the brand new Tag Cloud on blog sidebars. We just launched the ability to classify your posts into multiple tags or labels. This replaced the old category-based classification mechanism. In the sake of simplicity, we moved existing categories into tags, and removed the interface for category classification.

Tags work like keywords. You can classify a post with as many tags as you like and you can edit them later. We tag posts in a search engine friendly fashion, so that search engines like technorati pickup your posts and assign them to correct tags.

Try it out: Post about a movie, and fill out the tag input with: “movie; drama; scarlet; de palma”. Naturally, if you wish to use those exact tags, you’ll need to go out to your local theater and watch The Black Dahlia if you wish to write something interesting.

This system is great your personal information, allowing you to later retrieve your posts by combining tags. It also allows you to posts by other authors that use the same tags. It’s also great for finding out about people with your tastes, also writing on blog.com — for example other posts about The Black Dahlia). We’ll be working on some new browsing pages that will allow this feature.

If you didn’t enjoy this new tag cloud you can switch to the old tag listing system in the Sidebar section in the editor, just click edit in the tag cloud line and choose list. You also can order these blocks alphabetically or by number of posts.

One last note: in the tag cloud, the bigger the tag name the greater is the number of posts under the tag.

Maintenance work at 16:00UTC

Posted on 25. Sep, 2006 by Sérgio in Uncategorized

We’ll be launching a somewhat large software update by 16h00UTC (11h00EST, 09h00MST, 24h00WST). Expect a downtime of about ten minutes, as database servers will have to be taken offline. We’ll then post about new features that’ll be available!

Calendar and Comments management

Posted on 13. Jun, 2006 by Zii Bloggerrrr in Uncategorized

As you can see in this sidebar we have a new item - a calendar that allows you to browse our posts throughout the ages… If you wish to add a calendar to your blog:

Login > Click Manage > Click Sidebar > Click New > Select Calendar and submit

We also launched a new comment management system where you can choose to moderate your blog’s comments or even detail who can comment:

  • No one
  • Everyone
  • Only identified users (although emails are only visible to the blog’s author, in order to comment, readers have to supply their email address)
  • Only Blog.com’s registered users (this is the base for an even more enhanced comment platform were your readers and commentators can truly authenticate theirselves, keep track of their comments and have a profile picture associated to their comments)

Hope you like these new features!!

Regular software release warning

Posted on 05. Jun, 2006 by Sérgio in Uncategorized

We’ve launched a new software release, with a couple of user interface polish changes. There are no major features, just the softening up of some rough edges. Take your time appreciating the new statistics on the dashboard page :-)

Some users have reported javascript errors on the edit post page. All you need is to flush the cache of your browser: reload the page by hitting Ctrl-F5 or Shift-Ctrl-R on the new post/edit post page.

Happy blogging!

RPC Blogging interfaces

Posted on 24. May, 2006 by Sérgio in Uncategorized

The XML-RPC blogging interfaces are now online. If you prefer blogging using a desktop application, like Ecto, Flock, Performancing or any other that implements the MetaWeblogAPI, now you can. For applications that support discoverability, just point them to your blog address, and they’ll figure out the server parameters from there. For all others, you’ll need to provide this information:

  • Server address: http://rpc.blog.com/api/
  • API: MetaWeblogAPI (you may also use the Blogger or the MovableType APIs)

The account information is the same you use to login at blog.com.

Post helpers

Posted on 19. May, 2006 by Sérgio in Uncategorized

Did you write about The DaVinci code yet? No? We can help you! We are introducing our new post helpers, with microformats. Login, click New Post when you get to the dashboard. Now, on the New Post button, you’ll find a new drop-down arrow:

Click on the arrow, and select the type of post you wish to create. For The DaVinci code, select Movie (the book is old news). Fill out the search form with “DaVinci Code”, rate the movie, and click next. Tadaa! New post filled out for you. Just write the review and publish.

If you have not seen the movie yet, it’s no excuse for not blogging. We can even help you talk about the weather!
